False Memories of Eating Popcorn

I heard about this recent study (to be published in October 2011) over the weekend on an NPR game show and decided I had to see if it was for real.  The study claims to have shown that sometimes certain kinds of advertising can actually make people believe they’ve tried the product that’s being advertised.

Scientific American has a short podcast review of the study here.

I’ll look forward to seeing the details of the study when it comes out.  I guess I don’t so much doubt the findings as much as I find it incredible that we as a people have developed such an ability for deception, whether in deceiving ourselves or deceiving our target audience.
